The cartoony part of his introduction is that he can apparently afford to buy a house and libraries worth of spellbooks without being an accomplished mage. He does seem to use magic as a job, but he's not proud of the scale at which he does it. I went to check the episode because I knew he wasn't introduced as a NEET: the things he studies were shown to be useful, and as a major distinguishing characteristic from somepony like Moondancer, he does want to do more meaningful work.

Anyway, you forgot the school he goes to when he leaves Starlight. Celestia introduces him to Shiny and Cadance as "an old student of mine" because he went to Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns.
