Just make them invulnerable to civilian-grade weaponry. Have you forgotten the sort of firepower that something like the M-41 has? They use explosive-tipped rounds. You could easily make an alien variant, like the Praetorian, that is resistent to even those and requires armour-piercing ammunition.
