Somebody recently ported the gpu radix sorting to vrchat-compatible unity shaders: https://github.com/MichaelMoroz/VRChatGaussianSplatting so now you can actually render splats without too much fuss (still really expensive to render but way better than without sorting).
If you want to take scans yourself, I will shill Scaniverse. It's free, works on android (no lidar required), and does the splat processing on your phone, so you don't even need an account or internet. You just have to wave your phone around the area for 3 minutes, not manually take a bunch of pictures, and then processing for 10 minutes (even on a mid-tier 2022 phone). Melty yes but still way more pleasing than classic photogrammetry IMO, especially for foliage and nature.
