You *can* beat the goers in the initial blitzball tournament if you're familiar with the game mechanics and are willing to use cheesy keepaway tactics and maybe hide behind your own goal for a half but it's clearly a match you're supposed to lose.

I found the alternate postgame cutscene you get for actually winning kind of underwhelming considering what a pain in the ass is but you do get a strength sphere so that's something, I guess.
