But seriously, "they" has been an acceptable replacement to using a singular gendered pronoun where the gender is irrelevant for as long as Shakespeare was making plays. Not only that, but it's also a cognitively light pronoun in this role, much better than "it" or any of the recently invented pronouns for the same role.
