I studied modern political theory so I had to read a lot of Marx, Hobbes and Locke. Hegel was just a bit over the philosophy line for me at the time and I never came back to look at him in any real depth. I see Marx as a very aware response to the industrial revolution and he certainly had foresight on the kind of mathematical limitations of commerce based societies. Though I think his understanding of societies was less procedural than his understanding of economics. Not inaccurate for his time, but less predictive of the ultimate direction society took. I mostly see his work as a warning of the unavoidable loss of humanity that comes with industrial civilization and the impact of that kind of process on a society with such a strong historical reliance on the ecclesiastical institutions to uphold all aspects of life
