In the anime, they definitely had better chemistry and more intimate moments. You could rationalize it as more of being each other's Lalah (hard to say if Char had actual romantic interests in Lalah, after all). I don't know how the source novel treated their relationship. It is funny that both of the women he gets the closest too are both technically Zabis by blood.
