I was told that 鳥居, torii, were called like that because birds used to sit there, since, literally, it would mean something like "there are birds". But maybe the person who explained that to me was referring to the ancient bird statues, and not the animal themselves? Can't say.
I understand the birds would represent the sky, where gods were supposed to dwell?
Also, did the man you spoke with told you anything about the Japanese aborigine, before they were slowly driven away from the mainland? Did Shinto developed strictly as the newcomers' religion, or was it a joint creation with already existing practices?
