Hoshiguma's name probably derives from "Hoshiguma Douji", an oni who is mentioned in the Otogi-zōshi: a series of stories written in the Muromachi period. Hoshiguma Douji was a subordinate of Ibaraki Douji and Shuten Douji, and one of four onis who ruled Mt. Oe (alondside Kuma Douji, Torakuma Douji and Kane Douji). The hannya mask on her shield represents female demons in Japanese folklore but is now associated with wisdom in Buddhism.
