During WWI the contact lines remained relatively stagnated for literal years. Was Germany celebrating how its enemies were moving "at a snail's pace"? No. Germany was desperate, throwing men and equipment at the front as much as its demographics and economy allowed, knowing that the second they couldn't hold on their military would implode and their state will fold. That's exactly the situation Ukraine is in. Know what happened to Germany? Their worst fear came to fruition, and after years dragging men to the frontline with little changes in area at the front, their military couldn't hold anymore, began desperately retreating and Germany quickly lost the war. Completely. That's exactly what awaits Ukraine. Nothing is on their side: not their demographics, not their industrial output, not their economy.

The Soviets wanted to honor their defense pact with Czechoslovakia when Germany invaded. Instead the UK and France (who also had a defense pact with Czechoslovakia) settled to let Germany take what it wanted in the Munich Agreement, while rebuffing Soviet attempts to form an alliance against German aggression. The Non-agression pact with Germany exists entirely because the USSR needed to buy time in the face of western refusal to stop Germany.
