Your brain is used to your own body odors (sweat, breath, skin, farts), so they don’t trigger the same strong “intruder” reaction as unfamiliar smells. The olfactory system tends to tune down familiar scents over time (a process called olfactory adaptation).
When you know a smell is coming from you, you’re psychologically prepared for it. There’s no surprise disgust reflex because it’s not associated with danger or infection from an outside source. With other people’s farts, your brain reacts defensively: “Unknown chemical cloud , could be harmful.”
There’s often humor or even a sense of ownership with your own fart. That makes the brain process it more lightly. Someone else’s? More like an unwanted intrusion into your breathing space.
Your gut microbiome produces gases in ratios specific to you, so the exact chemical profile of your fart is subtly different from someone else’s. While both contain unpleasant compounds (like hydrogen sulfide), you’re subconsciously more tolerant of the exact mix you produce.
