Probably the graphics, I'd say. And the trailer was really whack. It's ultra generic, almost sterile, devoid of any personality. HoMM3 seeps character, its main menu, character backstories, inspiration for factions, factions themselves, lore, creatures, etc.
This game is just yet another ultra-safe corporate slop, even though it wasn't made by a corporation, it was made by a bunch of fans with an aim of getting funding from EA (and they managed to secure those funds and the rights for the game)
It's really a shame, because I played a couple of early builds of the game and it was quite fun. Doesn't hit the same as HoMM3, though.
It feels like an updated HoMM5 without all that boring skillwheel shite but with new animations, QoL features, working multiplayer and RMG.
I also don't know about the story, but it's supposed to be alright, since it was written (for the most part) by that Russian girl who worked on Pathologic 2 and XEL, who is a Russian member of the HoTA-Crew Team responsible for any lore-related stuff, you can even chat with him and discuss the lore on their discord, he responds to anyone.

It's not a remake and it was not supposed to be a remake, nor was it ever marketed as such.

This is lore-friendly since the game takes place on Jadame and not Antagarich. Braccada (Tower) doesn't exist there.
Same goes for Fortress/Stronghold. There ARE lizardmen and they MIGHT get their own faction, the devs have stated this on several occasions that one of the first DLC factions they want to release for Olden Era are the pirates/lizardmen.

Yeah HoMM3 and HoMM5 both had this model as well. You can't play Conflux without Armageddon's Blade nor can you play Dwarves or Stronghold in HoMM5 without purchasing respective DLCs
