The world is shit so that acting moral/good in the face of pure chaos actually has meaning.
Also If God was undeniably real (i.e he revealed himself to all of humanity) then there basically would be no free will. If an omnipotent, all-knowing thing told you to do X there would be no question and you would just do it. Therefore you would have no will.
Free-will = a will free of God.
