I work in the Casino industry, Vegas is dying because corporate interests overtook the classic Casino way of thinking.
When Casinos were Mob run, they gave away everything under the idea that gambling would make up for all those costs. So you would give away hotel rooms, show tickets, buffets, even some free-play and you would make it back double from the slot machines, roulette, and craps.
And yeah, sure, they give away free shit still. However it's nothing like it used to be. You can gamble a thousand dollars and no one will even ask if you want food or some kind of hotel room.
Corporate interests however moved away from this concept of keeping customers. In my local high end casino, if you blow 50,000 dollars on craps they won't even give you a free hotel room. You think they would try to keep a whale around, nope.
Instead Casinos now focus on generating profit from every department. Back in the day, it was normal for certain departments to lose money. The idea was that the games made up for the deficit. However, in the current age any department losing money is totally unacceptable.
Vegas has totally been taken over by these ideas. When I was a smaller child we lived in Vegas, and my parents remember how easy it was to get free drinks, hotel rooms, buffets, everything. I just went to Vegas this summer to play in the WSOP, and you could barely get anything for free if you tried. A fucking sandwich from the WSOP café was like 20 bucks.
So yeah, they made the assumption that people would go to Vegas because it's just Vegas, that idea is changing. Casinos are everywhere, and if you can drive thirty minutes to shoot dice, why get on a plane and pay 30 dollars for a burger in Vegas?
