Even in the fantastical or heavily stylized depictions the Japanese always made sure that Smaurai were never women, because by definition they were men. So you would see tons of female characters with weapons, like a ninja, or an assassin, but they were never "samurai".

For the japanese, a robot ninja is less silly than a female samurai.

So there's areas where you can have female characters. A lady Snowblood game would be neato, and kind of like a Hitman game.
