I feel like people sympathize with slain nobles/royals because you can read their letters and detailed accounts of their lives so there's a parasocial bond not unlike what people who aren't history nerds feel about Pewdiepie or Call Her Daddy. My GF is really obsessed with Marie Antoinette and her circle of friends.
One can forget that revolutions start because the normal people were suffering enough to be willing to risk their lives and upend their entire culture and economy. But of course the people who had to eat their dog to survive or were forced into prostitution didn't have their stories passed on.
