2 was amazing but had a lot of flaws and shortcomings that stop it from being better than 1 and 3 for me, namely the art style being designed around a scrapped lighting system, the absolutely insane legendary difficulty and all the jackal bullshit, a few sloggy levels, and missing Halo CE favorite weapons.
Reach had a better forge/custom mode than 3 but I'm not a fan of the updated mechanics, namely sprint/armor lock bullshit. The campaign gameplay also felt like something distinctly Halo was missing. Great story.
Halo 3 was the best all around package. A great, thrilling conclusion to the trilogy's story, fun, satisfying weapons, the lighting engine 2 was supposed to have, a legendary multiplayer mode, forge, custom games, file share, everything was perfect, and no game since, Halo or otherwise, has captured the sheer delight and magic of booting up Hao 3.
