I think you're thinking of either Retrobution or Open Fusion, I can't remember which, but SMI was basically like Legacy where they wanted to take the concept of the original game and remake it from scratch. New name, new storylines for the characters, new combat, they even changed the way the models were made and in the process of changing the game's movement system.
