He kind of ended the whole thing by saying that he "hopes" humanity would be able to 'overcome' such silly notions of religion so that we could 'unlock our full potential'. Also he said he finds religious people to be scary, but doesn't know why.

I wasn't trying to convert him or anything, but just the mention of God sent him into this long tirade against religion and I could just tell he's deeply hurt about things that have happened in life and likely still confused and trying to process everything in life through whatever lens he is currently familiar with, which, for some reason, seems to be "intellectualism" or whatever. He just put feelings away entirely and just wants to focus entirely on thinking or whatever, which is sad, cause I remember I used to be similar to that in some way, and everything he mentioned is the exact same pattern of thoughts and beliefs I've seen others constantly post on here as some sort of "arguments" against religion as well but it just doesn't really do anything but make me feel sad for them due to how blind they are to the simple truth right in front of them. It's like, they're making up all these specific thoughts trying to disprove something they don't actually understand, thinking it would help them feel better because it makes them look "smart" or it somehow gives them the appearance of intellectual exaltation above others, yet in the end, it still does nothing but keep them miserable and stagnant.
