What do you think the ideal explanation/setting to support lots of girls with strange bodies is?

I like the idea of a world where everyone's body is hand made from clay. Maybe it's a human profession of artisans that make bodies before life is put in them, or maybe everyone is directly made by the gods, but either way the ones designing the bodies are creative and eccentric.
