When I worked in a prosecutor's office, we had a forfeiture case involving a gypsy who had $125K seized at the border. He claimed that the money was for his son's wedding in San Francisco, but the government knew it was drug money because the RCMP told them based on wiretaps that it was drug money, and to look out for him. One of things he tried to do to establish the legitimacy of the money was to get the hotel manager to write a letter confirming the wedding had been planned there. The hotel told agents they had no idea who the guy was, then Treasury placed an undercover Customs agent in the hotel and sure enough, the gypsy showed up asking him to write such a letter.
Anyway, we were trying to find an expert witness regarding gypsy scams, and all I could find was liberal shit praising the noble and misunderstood culture. We finally found a history professor in Oklahoma who wrote a book called "They're all Crooks" or something like that. The Canadians said they'd be happy to supply expert witnesses regarding how sleazy and amoral they are too.
The deposition was a scream. The Assistant US Attorney had a bit of a sense of humor and went after the guy and his story regarding the wedding, paying particular emphasis to his claim that the wedding had to be elaborate ($125K elaborate) to restore the family's honor because the son getting married had been convicted of sex offenses with boys. The guy absolutely freaked out, cussing, screaming then crying.
The government settled with the guy, giving him back just enough to pay his lawyer and keeping the rest. I think the US eventually split it with the Canadians.
