Do you think the spaceship was a retcon or something intended before but just pulled off badly?

I feel like the tone of the whole game would be different if it had clearly started off with knowledge that the travelers were futuristic space crew. Like you'd expect one of the first things the traveler would be thinking about is finding their ship again or maybe getting some tech from their civilization up and running to help even the odds on an unknown planet. The way they've acted instead does seem like it's meant to go with a whole other genre rather than things being planned this way all along.
