Cole's paintings are beautiful, but I do enjoy the contrast with 18th century views on nature with 21st century views on nature. We nowadays actually LIKE the untouched wilderness and don't see endless growth as a good thing.
It's things like that that remind you that America actually does have a long and storied history. You can look at Thomas Cole's masterpiece portraits and listen to Stephen Foster's masterpiece folk songs and truly begin to intuit the vast cultural gulf that separates us from them.
Thomas Kinkade isn't bad, though. I prefer Rockwell since I like the 1950s better than the 1980s, but it is what it is.
