Could you care to elaborate? The murders as far we know were all in self defense or survival (Even the campers), and the most redeeming aspects of their life and reason to keep going forward for them is that they love each other.

Overcoming makes the character grow, and the magical aspects happens after the fact that they are in love with each other.
