30 March 1945. A German company with King Tigers, led by Captain Wolfgang "Wolf" Koltermann, moved to the south of Paderborn to halt the advancement of the American Task Force Welborn.
The American unit was led by Jewish Major General Maurice Rose, son of a rabbi from Poland. The General was at the rear of the column. After taking some German towns, they arrived in the forest following a minor road, and expected to capture Paderborn that night.
15,30h, the American vanguard is attacked by some King Tigers from far away, hidden in the woods. The column stops and General Rose asks for air support. Half an hour later, some P-47 Thunderbolt bomb the zone. The German tanks fire no more. Rose thinks the enemy has been destroyed and resumes the march.
19,30h, dark night. The Task Force Welborn has entered into the forest. The King Tigers, still hidden, fire on the entire column, destroying 17 tanks M4, 17 half-tracks, and other vehicles. General Rose tries to escape in his jeep but gets stuck and hit. He was the highest ranking US officer killed in the war.
