at least for mondstadt you are forced to get the relevant element characters to solve all the puzzles before you can even leave the nation. if you go to sumeru, fontaine, or natlan at an early enough AR, you'll have to rely purely on the traveler to solve all the gimmicks since you don't get collei and lynette until later AR ranks, and you don't get kachina until you start the natlan archon quest. but yes this has always been a thing and people will always complain about "gimmick mechanics" like they are a new thing in the game every time a new region comes out.
