Paulo is at least vaguely aware that Mike isn't acting right (Taeshi played it up in the comment as well). I could also see the angle that he subconsciously notices the parallels with Lucy leading up to her suicide attempt. If Mike kills himself in the dream then it could serve the purpose of snapping all of this into focus for him and spurring him to actually talk to Mike.
