Think of it like Black gangs at the time that attached themselves to Black nationalist types such as Malcolm X or Mexican-American gangs with Pancho Villa, and you'll get it; it's an edgy, dangerous, and rebellious aesthetic/ideology that comes with a built-in siege mentality.
