The right leaving academia is a terrible thing, and it's something I came to the conclusion to independently when reading about the history of left wing movements. Academia got very left in the 60s and 70s, and before they were actually bastions of white male traditionalism. For that reason, cultural conservatives didn't feel at home in academia, so they left. The left wing academics had a little party and felt they "won".
But cultural conservative activists didn't go anywhere, they just founded think tanks and activist groups in the 70s and 80s, but this time entirely outside academia. This meant that they were only listening to the dumbest conservatives possible with no hope for moderation.
If academia was the mainstay of conservative thought, there would be more chance for moderation, more chance for discussion.
