Also a result of being in a neither-here nor-there state where the EU would thrive if it had transnational authority but it's of course still not a federal unitary state so there's this rift between what it can do and what both detractors and advocates want it to do.
And of course it's also the general pattern of democratic decline amidst oligarchic expansion and subversion in the west (and I don't mean russian oligarchs or anything - they are also there but it's definitely a home-made strategic problem inherent to a political world that failed to appreciate how the economy also has to be more democratic or economic autocracy kills political democracy)
