Sort of a necessary evil. You do get perks (increased caps on most things, including docks), but you do have to pitch in a little bit in order to get the currency to buy them. That, and you may have to interact with people. Most of our guilds are pretty comfy though, and no, there is no functional difference between the two types of them.
