I think the distinction is that misery porn revels in showing bad things happening to characters.

MIA doesn't revel; bad things happen to characters in MIA because the Abyss is a dangerous place filled with dangerous creatures and dangerous people and our heroes our *woefully* unprepared for the journey they find themselves on. But the series doesn't revel in seeing characters get hurt or killed or suffer devastating losses... it just doesn't sugarcoat it when those things do happen.
