>the EU has long had tariffs on American goods
And America has long had tariffs on EU goods.
Stop saying the EU is somehow more strict with American goods and services than in the other direction. It is not. THere are minimal higher tariffs on US goods in the EU as vice versa pre-Trump (less than 2 percentage points) but that is because America exports over 100bn in services completely tax-free to the EU through software, social media etc. which cannot be tariffed.
If anything, even pre-Trump, the US had more tariffs and non-tariff barriers on EU goods than the other way around. That is why the EU has always been so desperate to tax Meta, Google, Amazon, etc. but has failed for a decade to do so because Poland, Hungary and Ireland always blocked any measure against the US.
