That's a good question. Is it related to the Knights of Malta? The Black Nobility? Who seem to be uniformly Bavarian and northern Italian nobility, but have some relation to Lombards, maybe some relation to the Franks (and thus the first European nation/empire after Rome), and maybe some relation to the Merovingians (the Frankish precursors who also have some argument to the Holy Grail, aka the holy bloodline). I'm skipping through a lot of details there, but just trying to paint a picture.
