While it has happened since the beginning, I think it really exploded once cars became widely adopted. Now anyone with a car can go anywhere they want in a country, as opposed to a horse where your range was heavily limited. So back in the horse times, people moved, but not often super far. But with cars (and planes), and especially with the Internet and modern cellphone networks, it's never been easier to completely relocate to the other side of the country. Makes it all the more depressing when people just drop contact. It's never been easier to stay in contact with someone. I give Facebook a ton of shit, but maybe the one good thing it did was allow people to reconnect with their old pals they hadn't seen in ages. I mean, back when people used it anyways.
