You wanted to blurt something out. A dumb joke. A snarky jab. Hell, maybe even propose that you should be the one leading just to piss them both off.
But no. You held back, mostly because you could feel how on-edge Shelly already was. She was staring you down, her white mask and cold demeanor reminding you of a certain red-haired guy, like she was daring you to open your mouth. Impressive, really, how she managed to say so much without saying a single damn word.
Good. She was learning. You’d give her this win without biting back. Just this once.
“As long as this crap’s not boring, I don’t mind you taking the reins.” That plus a shrug. You practically had to chew your own tongue not to say more. Fuck, being serious was exhausting.
Shelly let out a breath, almost like she’d been bracing for impact. Was she actually expecting resistance from you? “Good. In that case, klet’s start. I’ll fill you in as we walk.”
Then both of them turned their backs and started heading north.
Huh? Just like that? No follow up? No a single witty remark? The hell was going on?
“See? You’re not even needed. Barely wanted. How’s it feel being the third wheel?” That rough voice in your head again. What an annoying piece of shit.
You slammed a punch into the nearest light pole. Rusted metal bent with a groan, sparks shooting from the top. Your knuckles were barely scratched. Fuck, letting it out like that felt damn good.
Both Shelly and the guy in the dumb clothes turned to stare. Confused. Fuck. Better think fast for an excuse.
“There was a bug looking at me funny. Don’t make a big deal out of it.” You shrugged it off, stepping forward, looming behind them like nothing happened. A long yawn slipped out. Maybe it’d kill the conversation.
The man sighed and turned back. Shelly didn’t. She kept watching you. Studying you.
Fuck, that was weird. You liked being looked at, sure, but not like that. Some people just made it feel... so fucking wrong.
She raised an eyebrow. What, that supposed to be a question? If she wanted to know something, why the fuck didn’t she just ask?
You spat to the side. If that was her question, that was your answer.
She sighed and turned around, finally moving on. Good. As long as they stopped fucking questioning you...

You couldn’t help but notice how the streets felt emptier than usual. The central market was… dead. Yeah, a few people lingered here and there, but hell, it was the middle of the damn day! This place used to be bustling, packed with energy, parties, and idiots with way too much Lien burning a hole in their pockets.
And now? Half the stalls were shut or straight-up abandoned. The ones that were still open looked like they were clinging to life. Shit. Were the bars closed too? It’d been a while since you woke up drunk in some stranger’s place. Was crime getting that bad? Nah… that wasn’t it. Had to be something else. But what?
