yah ive watched that part a few dozen times. pretty sure its just the compensator blast from the artillery being used in a direct fire role.
pretty uncommon that artillery men would have used this method more than a couple times and probably greatly misjudged the distance friendly troops should have been before firing.
from what i understand the us military still practices direct fire role for triple 7's but i dont think its been used in the last ~30 years
