>not a concrete diagnosis where its saying "autism IS this thing"
Anon, what do you think a diagnostic manual is used for? The NHS's own standard for diagnosis is that the 4 major criteria from the ICD-11 *must* all apply (https://www.england.nhs.uk/long-read/a-national-framework-to-deliver-improved-outcomes-in-all-age-autism-assessment-pathways-guidance-for-integrated-care-boards/)
>without accounting for the differentials and degrees
That is about the extent to which each of the 4 criteria apply, it does not allow for any 1 being entirely absent. If something is absent, the deficits which do present themselves are likely better explained by another condition. Or, per the NHS, "none of the individual autism diagnostic criteria are exclusive to autism; that is, there is considerable overlap in diagnostic features of several communication, neurodevelopmental and mental health conditions... For these reasons, consideration of differential, that is, alternative or co-occurring diagnoses, is necessary as part of an autism assessment to establish whether a person’s behaviour is explained by none, one, or more than one of a range of possible diagnosable conditions."
