To many western cultures, the ability to waste is sign of wealth. You can buy something just to break it. You can drive around with your gasoline inefficient "light truck" that at best carries teo grocery bags. You can use 5 different subscription streaming services and maybe use one of them few times a week. You can buy food you want, not finish it, and then throw it away even when it would be edible for few days.
If some people don't waste resources actively, they feel like they are poor.
That's why in USA for example walking and public transit is just for poor people and most of the time even considered woke.
Unless you are a middle-class or richer westerner, you really can't understand it.
My cousin's parents said it best when I was a kid and they threw 2 days worth of good food to trash bin
