Wife of Russian Soldier Missing in Ukraine Says Commander Is Withholding Information
The wife of a Russian sniper serving in Ukraine has made a public appeal for information about her husband, who has been missing for two months, accusing his commander of being dismissive and refusing to provide any details on his status or whereabouts.
In a video appeal, the woman says her husband, Evgeny Sergeevich Shatov, 36, has not been heard from since being sent on a combat mission on April 18, 2025. Shatov, a father of four with the call sign "Khudozhnik" (The Artist), served in a sniper unit of the 70th Guards Motorized Rifle Regiment, based in Shali, Chechnya.
The wife provided screenshots of a text message exchange with a man she identifies as her husband's commander, who uses the call sign "Cherkes" (Circassian). When she asked for an update, the commander reportedly replied, "What am I supposed to tell you?" and "He'll be on combat missions for as long as needed." When pressed further, he claimed, "Where he is, the phone doesn't work, there is no signal."
The family says they have also filed a formal written request with the local military commissariat but have received no official information.
"I asked where Zhenya was, when he would get in touch," the wife says in her video. "I was told 'he will be there for as long as necessary.' We haven't received any information."
She states that her husband, who has a prior shrapnel wound on his right side, had only been granted leave twice in two years of service. She is demanding that military officials locate her husband and clarify his status.
