the meteor inside harkens back to the mythological time, many cultures worshiped a meteor stone. The Greeks had one at Delphi, called the Omphalos Stone, and according to the myth it was the stone that was fed to Cronus, which was substituted in lieu of the god Zeus. All the other gods were devoured by Cronus.
The Old Testament mentions that the Canaanites/Phoenicians, and even the Hebrews also worshiped a stone. The Phoenicians/Canaanites called it the Baetyl Stone, and the Hebrews called it the Bethel Stone (Baetyl ==> Bethel, so basically they added an 'h"). It's considered the place where Jacob saw the angels descending to earth and ascending to heaven, known as "Jacob's Ladder". Twin Peaks references it too
