Crazy shower thought I've had recently: What if the REAL reason for the One-Child Policy was to appease the Russians and remove the northern border as a potential war front? The Sino-Soviet split started over ideological conflict, but I can see why the Russians were antsy over the massive population/fertility gap as well as Mao's posturing over the Amur valley. There's even a whole subplot of chinamen flooding into Siberia in The Camp of the Saints. But now that China's way more urbanized and facing their own demographic crisis, Russia can just worry about Central Asians flooding in instead?
