> how come video games still have this stigma for being a hobby for losers?
Because it undeniably is. Sure, you can be normal and play a game to unwind for a half hour, one hour TOPS. But that's not what 99% of gamers are doing, and the games themselves are specifically designed to be as addictive and time-consuming as possible, rather than a healthy outlet.
Can you name ANY game "community" where the people in it are successful, attractive, inspirational, or even pleasant to be around? It's just kids, losers, and freaks in every single one of them. Look at this place. Furfags, gooners, and outright pedos spamming their stupid fetish topics 24/7.
I think there was very brief time in the late 90's to early 2000's right before broadband became widespread, where games encouraged healthy social interaction (4p couch play, LAN). Games like Dance Dance Revolution were at their peak, and brought people together in ways games today cannot (shared love of music, the endorphin rush of physical exhaustion, public meeting places). Back then it did seem like games could become something more than entertainment for kids and teens, that they might have their own unique place as entertainment we all enjoy casually.
But that is absolutely not what played out.
