They literally destroyed all Grecoroman Christian heritage from Syria to Spain. All their mosques were built over Christian basilicas from urban ambit. Just as the mosques of Cordoba and Damascus were built over basilicas.

Al Hakim bi Amr Allah ordered the destruction of all Christian churches and cathedrals from Jerusalem during X century.
The arab chronicler Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Razi proudly says in "Report of the kings of Al-Andalus" that during VIII century all the Christian temples of Cordoba, Emerita Augusta, Zaragoza, Italica, Tarraco and Toledo were destroyed or turned into mosques (the mosque of Cordoba was built over a demolished basilica).
In Spain what was left was the legacy of isolated Catholic communities that moved to the mountains and the arid sterile steppe regions from the plateau thinking it was the return of Jesus was about to start, so they did hide from Saracens and built their small rural churches.
