Its underrated.
The game itself has a lot of fun ideas and units and the late game works better than most other Civs.
But it doesn't have anywhere near as much personality as Alpha Centauri and the logical way of playing the game is to B line the victory conditions under the tech tree which kind of spoils the fun of unlocking a lot of the fun stuff.
If they remade Alpha Centauri with Beyond Earth's game play I'd be very happy.
PS: If you want to try it make sure to get the Rising Tide DLC, its a HUGE improvement.
