Just from what we learned from the followers, Gaster is a sort of Promethean figure. The CORE he made brought light and power to monsterkind, but consequentially he "fell into his creation" (which could mean a few different things). Since the mysteryman sprite, gonermaker, and 666 stuff are probably related to him as well, this paints a picture of a sort of Christ-Lucifer figure with parallels to both God and Satan. This type of syncretic spirituality has roots in Gnosticism and might seem really weird, but it's actually a common source of imagery for creators to put in their works. Homestuck was full of this type of stuff. And if it stopped and ended at Gaster, that would be one thing, but there's the disproportionate number of characters who are analogous to Satan, and the constant parallels to the Book of Revelation, and that whole meteor theory with the aliens and the water that's not OK to drink... I don't think anyone is prepared for how weird the ending of this game might get.
