They always cheat and use a different branch, it's never the latest stable release.
Once they're done, not all the additions make it to trunk.

I would really like to see a competitor.
There was going to be the Wizart DCC release in open-source form (they said the software was used to make the Netflix movie Secret Magic Control Agency), but they changed it to a free tier & subscription tiers instead, and rebranded:

And anyway, their head of R&D said in an article that "Our artists have increasingly begun to use Blender professionally in their 3D modeling tasks, so we are adding Blender support to our production processes".
