13 Dead, 20 Injured After Bus Carrying Mine Workers Plunges Off Cliff in Siberia
A bus carrying shift workers plunged off a cliff in Russia's far eastern Yakutia region overnight, killing 13 people and injuring 20 others, authorities said Monday.
The accident occurred in the Neryungrinsky district on a service road at the Denisovsky mining and processing complex. The bus, a NEFAZ model, was transporting 33 workers from the Vostochnaya Denisovskaya mine when it veered off the road and fell from a height of about 25-30 meters, overturning upon impact.
Emergency services responded to the scene of the "terrible tragedy," as described by the head of the Yakutia region, Aisen Nikolaev. Of the 20 injured, ten were hospitalized, with two reported to be in serious condition. A team of doctors was dispatched from the regional capital, Yakutsk, to assist.
The Investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation into the provision of unsafe services resulting in multiple deaths. Investigators believe the 52-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle. A separate criminal case was opened for violation of traffic and vehicle operation rules.
The Vostochnaya Denisovskaya mine is part of the Kolmar coal mining corporation. The company is linked to the family of Russia's Minister of Energy, Sergey Tsivilev.
