>“Sorry Alvin, but family comes first. Bronte is already likely to be annoyed with me. I’d rather not draw her ire anymore than I have to. These Sages may hold a tremendous amount of power, but I’d still risk being on their bad side than my cousin’s.”

Alvin sighs, not looking happy with your decision. He shakes his head, but does not push the matter with you any further. “Very well. I’ll lead the others to the Fodlan Embassy before taking my leave to make my report. Hopefully the Sages won’t be too cross and we can simply schedule a meeting another time.” Taking you a bit by surprise, he offers you a handshake. “I’d love to show you through Morfis myself, but I imagine that my work may take me away for a bit. It’s possible you and I may not meet again under the usual circumstances until the Competition’s start. Should that be the case, I wish you the best of luck, Tristain. Know that if there is anything I find out about Elric’s condition, I will send the information to you right away.”

>“Are you really going to be that busy?” You ask, accepting Alvin’s gesture with a firm handshake of your own.

Alvin nods. “They’ll likely need my help in preparing the key. Nevertheless, I will make my recommendation to the Sages that they throw their lot in with you for this tournament. Should they accept, someone else will come find you.”

>“Very well. Thanks for everything, Alvin. I doubt this trip would have been half as fun had it not been for you.”

“The feeling is mutual.” The Adjunct smiles. “I shall cheer loudly for your success, my friend.”

Alvin takes his leave, the rest of your party in tow with the exception of Chelsey. When the Adjunct’s back is turned, the dancer sticks her tongue out in a mocking gesture towards him.

“Careful with that one, Tristain.” Chelsey warns you. “He may be friendly on the outside, but he’s still an Adjunct of the Royal College. His true loyalties lie with the Four Royal Sages, which means that he must be against Bronte and the Princess. Whatever they’re planning, I’m sure it is to the detriment of her. Perhaps the reason he wishes to win you over to their side is to have a man on the inside that can tell him what your cousin is planning.”

>“I don’t know.” You say. “If he was really planning on betraying me, he has a funny way of showing it. He’s been nothing but helpful thus far. Without his aid, I’m not sure how easily I’d have made it to Morfis. And his presence did certainly keep things interesting for me.” You think to yourself that were it not for Alvin, you’d have fought far less, and thus been far more bored, and perhaps even in a less experienced state for this contest.

“One doesn’t get to his position without knowing how to wear a mask.” Chelsey says, “Just be careful is all.”
