It's an improvement. It was never the biggest issue though. The greater issue is that the dialogue is going to suffer for reason of MC sex selection being a thing at all. A lot of players feel the same way. A lot of games that do that, prove that. If that's the road they're going to take, they will really really have to go out of their way to avoid that pitfall in particular.
Don't have much faith they can do it given every other game that's done it has fumbled and kneeled to the gaystapo in some form or another. But if anyone was going to defy the expectation, Manjuu might. Azur Lane is one of the only games on the market that does at present.

On the other hand they correctly understand most Azur Lane players aren't going to switch games and selected accordingly. Still, they really should have picked a few token retards to save face.
